Work backwards.. use the least abrasive compounds first and then go heavier until you can get it out. Start with a clear coat scrub (like Meguiar's). In a lot of cases just applying that will remove a lot of marks. If that doesn't work, try a clay bar. If that doesn't work, 3M makes a good swirl remover that is slightly abrasive and may help rub it out. If that doesn't work, move to a heavier abrasive rubbing compound. Of course you could go straight to buffing, but I personally prefer to work backwards so that I get maximum benefit with minimum impact to the paint.
